How is AI being used in advertising and ad tech?
Artificial intelligence is transforming advertising by moving beyond content generation into campaign optimization, creative personalization, audience targeting, predictive analytics, and workflow automation. In this episode of Ad It Up+, we explore what AI can actually do for advertisers today—and where human expertise remains essential.
The episode covers four major applications of AI in advertising:
- Campaign optimization: AI can monitor campaign performance and adjust bids, budgets, targeting, and spend allocation in real time to improve performance.
- Creative generation and personalization: Generative AI can create ad headlines, social copy, images, videos, voiceovers, music, and translated creative variations at scale.
- Audience targeting and predictive analytics: AI can use first-party data and predictive models to identify purchase intent, anticipate next-best actions, identify trends, summarize performance, and recommend optimization opportunities.
- AI agents and workflow automation: Agentic AI can go beyond answering questions to help execute workflows such as building media plans, launching campaigns, monitoring pacing, generating reports, and making optimization recommendations.
The episode also examines the limitations of AI in advertising. AI cannot independently understand a brand's broader business priorities, reliably respond to unexpected real-world events, understand cultural nuance and emotional context, or eliminate bias without human oversight. Consumer behavior is also unpredictable, meaning AI-powered predictions are not perfect.
Ultimately, AI is not simply replacing marketers. Instead, it can automate repetitive work, surface insights faster, and give advertising teams more time to focus on strategy, creativity, and relationship building. The competitive advantage will come from knowing where to use AI, when to trust it, and when human expertise needs to take the lead.
